OMG he's cheating! (part 9)

I received a call on Monday from Patrick. He wanted to know if I had decided yet. I told him to give me some more time but I’m sure he could hear the ‘of course, I want the job’ in my voice. I went about my shopping and couldn’t believe the things I could buy in addition. Then the coolest thing happened in the shop. I saw Carl Flints! He was checking out a tripod. I mastered courage and walked to him. “Hi.” I said with a shy voice. He turned to me and smiled. “Hello, there.” He replied and looked down like I was some dwarf. “I’m a friend of your sister, Zeba. She told me about you and I was so thrilled. I’m an artist and I want to master in photography too.” I said with the widest smile in the world. He smiled too and we had such an amazing conversation about cameras and lighting. This was so cool. He had a call so he took a step away to talk. I wonder why because I could hear him clearly! “Oh why, what did you do? But that is not proper? Have you recorded the full album? Is it because of money? Calm down I’m coming home.” He said and turned back to me. “I really like your idea of using the flashlights. You know what, if you are not busy now, we could go to my studio and I’ll show you how to use the 7D to make a good video.” He offered. I felt like jumping up and down. “Yea cool, let’s go.” I said.

His studio was 10 times bigger than mine and the equipment he had was amazing. He had black and white photos all over the wall. I saw one with a lady in a bikini with amazing boobs….oh right it was Zeba! Speaking about the devil, she walked in a few minutes after we got there. She didn’t notice me, thank goodness. “Carl, I’m serious. He won’t give me the songs. He says I should go tell his girlfriend it was my fault. Can you imagine that?” She said. This information was super! I grabbed a magazine and held it over my face. She couldn’t recognize me. Carl walked closer to her and they went outside. In fact, I wasn’t going to sit around and just allow such info to pass me by. I got up and walked to the door.

“What exactly happened between the two of you?” Carl asked. She hesitated. “Listen, that manager I got you isn’t very patient. If you don’t send him the music before the end of the week, the deal will be off. Zeba I can’t keep taking care of you. You need to start taking your life more seriously.” Carl advised. “I know, I know. Look, it’s not like what we did was my fault. His girlfriend found out about us and left him. Now he’s pissed off with me. I didn’t do anything wrong, did I? He always liked me so why is he tripping?” She explained. This girl is odd ooh. Carl sounded pretty disappointed. “Zeba, he moved on. Obviously he loves his girl more than you. The fact that a guy finds you attractive doesn’t mean you should sleep with him, Zeb.” He finally said. “Whatever, the silly part is his girlfriend had an affair with someone else too, anyways. So what do we do about my music?” She asked. “Let me talk to him but you have to do as he says if it’s reasonable alright? This contract is one in a life time plus you have invested too much already.” He advised. I noticed their voices were getting louder so I rushed to my seat.

When I got home I rushed to the kitchen. I dished out my food and run to my room. I felt like a detective after eavesdropping. So Sesi already knew Zeba, probably used to drool over her boobs and she shows up with a beautiful offer, money to expand his studio and his all-time ‘fantasy’. Hmm… things were not looking too good for my Ewe friend. How about what she said about Naa? Did she really have an affair with someone else? I was cracking my brain too much to see if Sesi could come up with a way to save himself but honestly there was none. For some strange reason I was on his side small but could Naa be cheating too?
I went down to my studio after eating to do some work when Naa called. She sounded so lively and herself again.

Naa: Hey you won’t believe what happened.
Me: What?
Naa: Sesi asked like 10 of his friends to call me and apologize on his behalf yesterday. To think that was all he sent a CD to me with ‘I’m sorry’ songs and chocolate. I didn’t play the CD but I ate the chocolate. (giggling)
Me: who wouldn’t? (giggling too)
Naa: But one major thing he did really surprised me. He came to the office and told me he would wait till I was ready to talk to him. I told him to leave but he refused and sat at the bank the whole day. I left for a meeting at the head office and when I came back at like 5:30 he was still there.
Me: Aww, that’s so cute.
Naa: Maybe it is but it doesn’t change what he did. He slept with another girl Adoley. He disrespected me. I may be able to forgive him but I’m not sure I can forget.
Me: I know and I think the two of you need to talk so you can hear him out before you make your decision.

You got into this relationship together and if you want to end it, at least listen to what he has to say.
After the end of the conversation I think I’m one of the best councilors ever but my cousin was more suspicious now. I vowed to keep my lips sealed, no more wahala for me but somehow I knew this would come round and bite me. I was so busy practicing what Carl taught me that I didn’t notice time had flown away. I heard my mum come home but kept on working. The results I was getting were amazing. I didn’t even hear another car drive in. “Hey, artist extraordinaire, I heard your part time job is paying you big time.” Naa said. I looked up and saw her at the door. “Eii, when did you get here?” I asked. She walked in and sat down. “Oh I just got in, Aunt Stella left her check book. I just brought it over to her. She told me you are always here.” She replied. I put my camera down and sat down too. “You know how I do.” I said and giggled. I wanted to ask her if she ever had an affair but I just couldn’t. “Hey do you have to get home early? There is this cool shop I just found, they sell formal clothes and shoes. Wanna check it out?” I lied. “Except you are spreading me because I don’t have money.” She answered. “Oh don’t worry, we will do by-our-powers-combined” I said and we both laughed.

When we got to the traffic light Naa turned to look at me. “Adoley, you are sending me to Sesi’s house. Seriously?” She said. “Naa, you guys need to talk. I’m not saying you should take him back. Just hear him out.” I pleaded. I felt like I was being paid to do that…annoying! She paused for a while and drove to his place. I literally dragged her out of the car to the front door. We knocked and Sesi came to the door. “Hi, Naa please come in and thank you for coming.” He said. I could see his eyes light up. “I brought her ooh.” I butt in waving for some of the attention. I waited outside while the lovebirds spoke inside. You won’t believe what happened after like 15 minutes. A blue Camry drove into the house and Zeba came out! This witch kwraa why? I walked up to her and tried to send her back. She wouldn’t take anything I said. Again, I would have held her back but she was far taller than me and who knows what she would have done. She rushed into the house with me following her like some Chihuahua.

OMG he's cheating! (part 8)

“Errr I mean if there ever was, you shouldn’t be worried.” I replied sweating in her air-conditioned car. She slowly parked by the side of the road. She seemed strangely calm.“Adoley I know you know something about Sesi seeing somebody else so please tell me.” She said, ever so politely. There was no way out for me. “Naa I would have told you about it but I wasn’t sure myself, you know. I was just checking to make sure, you can never be too sure…” I stuttered. “What’s her name?!” Naa screamed. “It’s Zeba.” I answered to save my life. She turned away and sat up straight in her seat. “It’s good you told me. Here I was mad at him because he was invited to go golfing with my dad this afternoon and he forgot. You know my dad doesn’t like him, right? I had to force my dad to give this guy a chance and he foolishly blew it. In fact, I’m fine and I don’t want to talk about that jerk again.” She said sadly. I decided not to probe any further because she had started to drive into the road again.

I was to spend my Saturday writing a list of the things I needed for my exhibition and go shopping on Monday but all I could think about now was my cousin and her jollof and big boob loving boyfriend! Soon-to-be-ex-boyfriend. I felt so bad about it. Me and my big mouth! I spent a whole hour in my studio without doing anything. The guilt was just eating me up. When I saw Sesi calling I knew I was finished.

Sesi: Your cousin dumped me. I hope you are happy now! You just had to tell her.
Me: Sesi I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to tell her. When I saw her angry I thought she already knew. Why would I do anything to hurt her?
Sesi: You know what? I’m going to send a complaint to your workplace. You broke the confidentiality rule. If I’m going down, you are going down with me!
Me: What? Has it come to this? Hello?...

He hung up on me! Eii this boy, was he serious? This wasn’t good kwraa. I tried calling him back but he wouldn’t answer. I rushed up to the kitchen and met my mother cooking. I walked over to her and asked. “Mum, I’m in a bit of trouble. Well not yet but it’s on its way.” I said. “That kind of reminds me of how I felt after saying I do.” She replied and giggled. My mum is so dry! Well maybe it was funny but not at that very moment. She noticed she was the only one laughing and stopped. “Ok, what is it?” She asked. I took a deep breath and replied. “I found out a caller from work was cheating on someone I knew and I sort of told the person by mistake.” My mum stopped stirring her soup and looked at me. “She dumped him and now he is threatening to report me to my work people.” I added. “Oh Adoley, maa aba? (why) You told me you wouldn’t discuss these things with anyone.” She said. “When did you tell her?” She asked after thinking for a while. “Last night.” I answered feeling worse than before. “Well that’s not too bad. The secrecy can only be used against you if you are an employee but your contract ended before. The charges won’t be major. They just not hire you again. You just lost a great opportunity for your art work.” My mum explained. Now she cared about my art work. I felt like disappearing.

My mum convinced me to sort things out with Sesi or else I would lose everything so I went to Naa. Yes, that was my plan. “Naa, please just talk to him. If he chooks me I’m finished. I need this job.” I begged. She was at a salon near her house having her hair done. I wasn’t a bit shy of the people eavesdropping. I was wild like a tiger! Naa was just not minding me. How selfish could she be? Unfortunately this didn’t just remain a thought. I actually asked, “How selfish can you be?” Naa turned and looked at me, disturbing the hair dresser. “What do you mean? I’m sorry but I’m the one who has been cheated on here.” She shot back at me. Ok fine I deserved it. “Naa I’m sorry.” I said and decided to shut up for a while. She noticed I was silent and pulled up a phone from her bag. “Hello, no we are not going to talk about anything. I heard you want to sue my cousin for telling me the truth. Is this true? Ok, good. Listen I’m really hurt now. I have to go.” She said and hung up. “He just used you to get to me. He wasn’t serious about what he said. You can go get your dream job now.” She said in a very dull tone. Wow, that was good news with just a 3 minute call but I didn’t feel as happy as I should. Naa was hurting and here I was thinking about myself. “Thank you.” I said and she nodded. “Won’t you go? All is fine now.” She said to me. “Naa I’ll just stay here and hang out with you. Where are you going from here?” I responded. She turned and looked at me with a smile…the first I had seen in two days.

I spent the whole weekend with my cousin. At least it was the least I could do. We went out shopping, watched movies and ignored Sesi’s calls. I didn’t though. Eii who was I to do that? He kept calling me and telling me to talk to Naa for him. He literally sent her 22 apology texts (approximately 88 Pesewas, oh but that isn’t much, ahiaa) and called every hour. I could tell he wanted her back real bad but did she want him?

OMG he's cheating! (part 7)

It’s funny how other matters disappear when money comes your way. I was so eager to tell my mum about the money I could be making to boost my art work. She was enthusiastic yes and then she did it. That annoying parent thing. “Wow that means if you work full time you could be making more than a lot of people. You should take it full time.” She said. “Mum, you know how I feel about art. It may not be bringing in 1000s of Cedis but with more input it will.” I replied.

My mum just doesn’t get my passion. To think that was enough she went on this time with a heavier blow. “50 Cedis an hour wow, that means you would have to start buying fuel and you know pay a few bills in the house. We all know you use the most electricity especially in your studio.” She added. “Huh? But I’m on the way to your office. You will still do this journey if I’m not here.” I said getting frustrated. “Fair enough, electricity bills it is then.” She said and smiled. Her phone rang and she answered it. This woman eh? She spoke for a while and hung up. “My dear, I’m picking something up from Aunty Molly ok?” She said and took a left turn. As we drove to my aunt’s place I noticed we were close to Sesi’s Studio. “Mum drop me off here. Yea, right at that bus stop. I’m just saying hello to a friend. I’ll wait for you here. I know my mother. When she says ‘picking something up’ she also means doing a little chatting too.

I rarely do surprise visits but I really didn’t want to have to wait idly for my mum besides a Dr. needs to check on his patients’ anaa? When I got there I knocked just ones and the door flung open. Naa rushed out. She looked very mad. Then Sesi followed. “Naa seriously don’t do this. We are adults we can work this out.” He said. They both completely ignored me like I was Casper. I walked to Naa who was rushing to her car. “Naa what’s wrong?” I asked a bit confused.  She just ignored me. Sesi caught up with us. “Naa please, let’s just talk.” He said. Then the highlight of the night happened. She turned around and slapped him. Ouch!

I would have held her back but we Ga people don’t play. She wouldn’t have hesitated to give me one too and in a way he deserved it. Sesi had the worst look now. A mixture of embarrassment and confusion. “You think I’m stupid don’t you? You think I’m clueless about all that you have been doing eh? Well guess again.” She said. “Naa would you like a ride home?” She asked, ever so politely. I nodded and sat in the front seat and we drove off. When we were on the main road I turned to her and said. “Naa, I don’t think he loves her. It’s you he is serious about.” She slammed the brakes instantly and I almost flew into the windscreen! “What did you say?!” She thundered at me. “There’s another girl? Who is she?!” She yelled again. Now I was screwed. This was the best time for an earthquake to hit Accra.

Afua

I played ‘Need for Speed’ for like maybe an hour
Lifted some weights and took a long cold shower
I played music and searched for ways but couldn’t find
A single way to get Afua completely out of my mind

I remembered the way she drove when I played ‘Need for Speed’
In the shower I could almost hear her yelling “Kwame I’m taking the lead!”
I loved the music she loved so my favourites where her’s too
I never did, but now I know that I should have told her ‘I love you’

I can’t believe the girl that used to have my back 24/7 is gone.
It’s all my fault, I accept that, I shouldn’t have done her wrong.
Now she’s with another man, I hope he makes her feel like a princess
Because God if you give me Afua back, I promise I’ll make her feel like a goddess

OMG he's cheating! (part 6)

I opened the door for him to come in. He walked into the hall and sat down. “Would you like something to drink?” I asked politely. He shook his shook his head. “Let’s cut the innocence, what have you told Naa?” He said immediately. I sat down across him. “What are you talking about?” I tried to defend myself. “Adoley. I know you are the one from that advice company I called. Don’t even act like it’s not you. I called them today and guess what they told me, they are not working today and you are at home. I still had doubts so I called and bulls eye! The same voice. So tell me. Tell me what you have told Naa.” He said. His voice was loud now. “I haven’t told her anything.” I said with my head down. “Liar! What did you tell her?!” He shouted getting up. “Hey don’t shout on me. If you had kept your sexual edge under control all this wouldn’t have happened!” I yelled back at him. All of a sudden there was an awkward silence. Then he sat down again. “I’m sorry for yelling. I’m just a little frustrated. Naa just sent me a text saying we need to talk. I thought you had told her about…what I told you.” Sesi said calming down. I almost felt sad for him but it was really his fault.

I convinced him to take a glass of juice and it really helped to calm him down. I told him the text probably didn’t mean anything serious and how much Naa loved him. “Now the problem is nobody else but you. You need to stop seeing Zebra or whatever her name is.” I advised. He nodded. He knew what he had to do already. “I think she’s late news now. When I brought Naa to the studio she got the picture.” He said. “Have you seen her today?” I asked. “No, the session is at 6pm. I will see her then.” He answered. “Good, make sure Naa is there again. She will know you are serious. She brought the other guy to make you jealous. Let her know you weren’t moved. This time be more passionate with Naa ok?” I said. He nodded and got up to leave. “I hope I don’t have to pay you oh.” He teased on his way out. I laughed and shook my head. “You better stop asking questions or else you might.” I said in reply.

That evening I called Naa to find out if she was going over to Sesi’s place. I asked it indirectly though. She said she was a bit busy at work but that was the plan. My cousin clearly didn’t know what was at stake. Then it hit me. She was doing nothing wrong. He was the one to blame. I mean, you shouldn’t just sleep with someone because she has nice boobs and cooks jollof well or even gave you money! It’s totally unacceptable. The only thing that prevented me from telling Naa was the look on his face when came over. He looked very sorry for what he did. I decided to wash my hands off their matter and watch a movie. Microwaved some popcorn and watched a new movie on my laptop, yes I’m more or less a couch potato.
When I woke up I realized I had a text from my workplace. We were to come back to work. I got dressed quickly and rushed off with my mum. It was Friday, my last day! I couldn’t wait for this drama to end. When I got to the office Patrick apologized several times for the day before. “You are apologizing for giving me a holiday? Wow, this was a good job.” I said to myself. For some strange reason I had missed my little desk. That was so odd. I had more calls than usual that day. It was like all the callers knew I was leaving so they wanted to utilize me well. When it was lunch time my brain was tired. I noticed that I hadn’t thought about Sesi and his drama at all. That was good right?

The Jollof rice with meatballs that I eat seemed to rejuvenate my brain. No wonder Sesi was crazy about Zeba’s Jollof. What was I saying?! I got back to my desk and in less than ten minutes another call came in. It’s not easy thing on a very full stomach but oh well. My Friday went well. The problems people were complaining about weren’t too complicated to from their responses they seemed pleased with what I told them. Pheew. Now I hope I get that raise, Patrick was talking about. It was now time to get paid! Patrick called me to his office and sat me down. “We really like the way you work. My boss was impressed at how easily you adapted to the job. Here you go.” He said smiling and handed me a check. I smiled too when I saw the amount. I had got the raise woo hoo! “I know we signed you up for just a week but we want you to work full time. I read your application letter and I know your art is top priority so we have decided to offer you a flexi hour job. Just 4 hours a day 3 times daily.” Patrick said turning around in his swivel chair. Just before I opened my mouth he added. “50 Cedis an hour.” He said and smiled. My jaw dropped like an anchor but I managed to pull it back up. “Just think about it ok? I’m in no rush.” He said. WOW WAS HE KIDDING???

A wife, a mother, a woman

"Mum look. Is it ok?" Kofi asked his mother, holding up a clay mould. "Wow, Kofi your father will love this!" She responded. Kofi smiled and run off to his cousins. "What was that?" Her sister asked taking a pot of soup off the fire. "I have no idea oh. So far as it keeps him happy, he can make as many as he wants." She answered and they both burst out laughing. The two women were cooking a meal for their parents. It was their fathers birthday and they decided to take the burden off their mother to prepare dinner. "Wow, it should be my birthday everyday." Mr. Obeng said walking into the kitchen. "Adjoa, when is Henry coming again? It's been how long 2 years?" He asked. "Yes ohh, two years. They arrive in two weeks." Adjoa replied. "Daa you should see the present Kofi made for him. It's priceless." Akua teased.

After the huge meal, the family sat in the backyard enjoying the breeze. The children where in the room watching cartoons with the nanny. "Since your mother is here I can't keep talking about how nice the meal was or else she will starve me when you leave." Mr. Obeng teased. "Oh Daa." Akua said and they all giggled. "It's good you know your wife well." Mrs. Obeng responded and they all laughed. The stars were bright and the full moon lit up the sky. "Henry and I will be moving to Accra when he comes back."  Adjoa said. "Oh that's good. What's the reason though?" Mrs. Obeng asked. "He wanted to tell you himself but it looks like my passion for kokonsa has caught up with me. He is getting promoted." She blurt out with a smile. Akua and Mrs. Obeng clapped in joy. "That is amazing. After just two years on the field? Congratulations." Mr. Obeng said with a smile. "Yes oh. His superiors were so impressed with him. He is moving to ... position just next month. I'm so excited!" Adjoa went on. "Aww I'm happy for you. Now Kofi can see his father more." Akua said.

"Mrs. Dodoo, I'm sorry but I would be a little late for our meeting. Yes, ok, thank you for understanding." Adjoa said and hang up the phone. She was dropping Kofi off at school. Her neighbours who usually took him to school along with their daughter couldn't do it. Apparently their daughter was a little under the weather. "I will come for you at 5 o'clock ok? Don't go home with anyone else. Just wait for me alright?" She ordered and Kofi got out of the car. As he rushed off she turned and saw his lunch money on the backseat. "Kofi, you left your money!" She yelled. He turned around and started running back to the car. Then her phone rang. "Hello, is this Mrs. Henry Dartey?" a male voice asked. "Yes it is." She replied. Kofi was infront of the car now. She stretched for the money. "I'm calling from the Ghana Armed Forces. I am calling to inform you that you husband...passed away yesterday. He was indeed a great man and his death is deeply felt by all of us..." He went on. Adjoa dropped the money immediately. Kofi picked it up and looked at her. She looked at him fighting the tears. "Mum are you ok?" Her son asked her. She managed and smile and nodded so he turned around and left. She waited till he entered the school and put the phone on the passenger seat. The officer was still talking. Then she put her head down on the steering wheel and started crying.

"Thanks for the ice cream mum." Kofi said smiling from ear to ear. "Anything for my darling. Come here." She said. He rushed and sat right next to her. "Do you remember the really cool place I told you about?" She asked. "Which cool ...oh yes Heaven?" Kofi responded. "Yes Heaven. It's a big beautiful place with lots of nice people and plenty ice cream and chocolate. Remember the Angels too?" She added. Kofi nodded and smiled wider. "Daddy is gone there. He is having so much fun with Jesus and the angels." She explained. "Wow, that's so cool but they say if some one goes to Heaven you will never see them again." He said looking at his mother. "You won't see him here but you will see him when you go there." She added. Kofi turned to look at the clay molds he made for his father. "Then I can give him his presents when I get there." He said and smiled to himself. "Let's go tomorrow mum!" He screamed. "No my darling we can't go ourselves. God has to invite us or else we will get lost. So when God wants us to go I'll tell you ok?" She replied, a bit startled. "But for now, your father can see you so you have to be a good boy so that he will be happy with you." She added. He looked up into the sky and waved. "Bye bye daddy." He said and Adjoa smiled.

This story is dedicated to all wives, mothers and women :) Happy mothers day and to all kids who have lost a parent.

OMG he's cheating! (part 5)

The next morning was even worse. I woke up very early thanks to a text message I got from my workplace...temporal workplace to be exact. There was an incident the night before that led to the phone lines and computers jammed. Work was canceled for the day. "Good news." I whispered to myself then I remembered. Sesi would probably try to call for more help. Oh this wasn't good. Why couldn't we just hang around at work till the problem was solved? What the heck!

My mum knocked on my door and yelled. "I'll be out in 10 minutes oh!" That means 20 minutes. She does to make sure I 'hurry up'. I walked downstairs in my over-sized t-shirt. My mum almost choked on here cup of tea when she saw me. "Aren't you going to work today?" She asked concerned. I shook my head. I took a bite of her bread and explained why. When my mum was leaving I could hear my phone ring. I rushed to my room and answered it.

Naa: Hey. How are you? Are you on your way to work?
Me: No, I don't have work today. What's up?
Naa: I'm good oh. I wanted to talk to Aunt Stella. Is she there?
Me: Yawa oh. She just left like a second ago. Call her.
Naa: I've tried. Her phone is off. I guess I will just wait and call her office line. We need some information for her to validate some transfer she wants to make.
Me: Ok, ok don't bombard me with your bank terms. How is Sesi?
Naa: Hahaha he's good oh. Has he called you? He asked me for your number last night. I don't know what he wants to tell you though. Adoley I have to rush, boss. bye.

When Naa hanged up I had the most confused look on my face. What did Sesi want to tell me? I decided not to think about it too much. It was probably nothing. I fell on my bed and closed my eyes. I tried to imagine the art project I wanted to undertake and decided to go online and check out the prices of some camera equipment. Positive thinking. I'm sure you are wondering why I've taken my cousins relationship so personal. Simple; my cousin and I are closer than sisters. She has always been there for me. We grew up together; when her father died we got even closer. She had my back straight from primary school. I couldn’t let any guy just break her heart like that. She had introduced Sesi to her mother and we all knew about him. He had to make things right.

After less than an hour the guilt of knowing was killing me. I had to do something. I took a shower and went downstairs. I sat down on the dining table and made myself some breakfast. Then without any warning my phone rang. The number was strange. I knew it was Sesi. I took a deep breath and answered it.

Me: Hello?
Sesi: Hi, Adoley this is Sesi, Naa’s boyfriend.
Me: Oh yea hi.
Sesi: I took your number from Naa because I wanted to see what you are doing with the pictures you took.
Me: Pictures? Oh yes I’ve started working on them already.
Sesi: Oh that’s nice. Are you working on them now?
Me: Yes oh. Busy on them.
Sesi: Wow, can I came to your office to see how they are turning out?
Me: Well no, that would be a problem. I didn’t go to the office today. Don’t worry I will email them to you when I’m done.
Sesi: Ok that’s fine. Enjoy your day.
Me: You too.

It wasn’t until I hanged up that I realized what was happening. This call was not about the pictures, he wanted to hear my voice. Oh this wasn’t good at all! I sat there staring at my phone and wondering the worst that could happen. If he figured things out and stopped calling I would be compelled to tell Naa what is going on. I mean after all he IS cheating. The doorbell rang and I called the helper to go get the door. She was nowhere to be found so I walked to the door myself.
