Writer's block, yea!

So I'm sitting behind my computer wondering what amazing poem will appear
Hoping my mind picks up on something in my music or even the feel of the air
I'm thinking, "write about love, no pain, no friendship" the decision is just not clear
So do I  wait till my inspiration finally comes and knocks my head saying "I'm here"
No I wont because I don't need to write about love or pain or friendship or even fear
For you to listen, for you to get my message, for you to be cheerful, for you to hear
Because what I write is true, the real things I go through. So I did it. No more writers block, yea!!

That neighbour in my hood 3

“No, you called me like 3 times. You called just when I got home and the line cut. A few minutes after you called me back. Then just 15 minutes ago.” I explained. His face was blank. He raised an eyebrow and I knew there was trouble. Then it hit me, Rita. When Julian called to get the number she probably decided to play a prank on me. I giggled and Julian asked me why. I told him the whole story and he calmed down. “For a minute there I thought you had lost it.” He teased. “Very funny.” I said and hit his arm. “Hahaha, sorry but it’s true. Imaginary calls and all, come on Juliet.” He giggled. I joined in. “You know what? Let’s call Rita back and show her how it’s done.” I said, taking out my phone. I called the ‘first Julian’ but there was no reply. “Maybe she quit.” Julian said. He said it was only fair that he show me his place since he knew mine. “Oh cool, let me go tell my dad I’m stepping out for a bit.” I said and went back inside. I did just that and came out.

“Do you have any friends around?” He asked as we walked down the road. “Not really. Well there was this guy I met who lives like down that road.” I said pointing. He looked in the direction and nodded. “I later found out he was an opportunist so that was that. Ah, no there is this other guy I know, kind of forgot his name but he is really cool to talk to.” I said. We moved to the side of the road when a car was coming. “Oh I see. At least you have had some luck. I never really meet people.” Julian said. I immediately started laughing. “Why, what did I say?” He asked completely clueless. “I don’t think you are making an effort. Plus you are probably picky.” I explained.

He stopped walking and looked at me. “You know, you are not the first person to say that to me.” He finally said. I smiled. “Look, if you want to make friends you have to be one.” I added. He looked at me rather offended. “Eh, are you saying I’m not friendly?” He asked. I giggled and looked away. “After calling me a mad woman, I’m sure I’m entitled to say that.” I teased. He laughed. “You are so witty. I like people like you.” He said. “Thank you, and you see, you are picky.” I said again. This time he nodded. He was gradually getting my point. “Hey but I got to know you. That must count for something right?” He shot back. I thought for a while and said. “Not really. If my phone hadn’t fallen down we probably wouldn’t be having a conversation for you to figure out how amazing I am.” I said running my hands through my hair. We both laughed. “I see, somebody is getting ahead of herself. Slow down oh. But you are right.” He teased some more.

We got to his house. It was a nice house with a very green compound. “Nice place.” I said. He smiled and invited me in. “I can’t stay long oh.” I said as we walked inside. I noticed the black Corolla parked in the corner. “I’ve been meaning to ask. Did you cook for your little brother?” I asked. He turned to look at me sharply. “Sorry, I overheard you telling him something about Jollof.” I said. Julian thought for a while and remembered. “Yes I did, actually it is for my uncle too.” He said. I nodded, impressed. He told me to have a seat when we were in the hall and was about to excuse himself when his little brother came running in and shouting. “Julian, I called the girl we met, she’s really cool. You should meet up with…” He noticed me and froze. He had a phone in his hand. “Kevin? Did you…” Julian started but I cut in. “My goodness. Why didn’t it occur to me?” I said with a little laugh. The little boy ran back inside. “Kevin, come back here!” Julian yelled and run after him. It was him all along.

Julian came back down stairs with his little brother. “Go on.” He said, nudging him. “Ermm, I’m sorry I called you and pretended to be Julian.” He said with his head down. I smiled and walked to him. I kneeled down so I could see his face. “Kevin it’s ok. I forgive you.” I said. He raised his head. “It’s just that, well Julian doesn’t really have lots of friends around…” He started but Julian cut him short. “Okaay, that will be enough. Juliet I’m really sorry if this made you feel uncomfortable.” He said. I stood up straight. “Oh it’s fine. There wasn’t any harm done.” I said and looked at the time. “Anyways I have to be going. Kevin, do you want to come and see my place?” I asked. Kevin lit up immediately. “Yes, sure. Can I?” He said and looked at Julian. “Ohhh alright. Go and wear your slippers.” He said reluctantly. “Yes! I told you she was cool.” He said and run off. I couldn’t help laughing. “Now that was embarrassing.” Julian said as we walked out of the house. If these weren’t interesting neighbours, I wonder who were.

That neighbour in my hood 2

"Oh hi." I replied. I leaned on my gate. "Are you back home yet?" He asked. I immediately looked around. There was no one there. I smiled. "Yup. I just got home." I said and entered the house quickly. He sounded different on the phone. He was talking a bit faster. Maybe he was nervous. Hehehe. I was just about to ask a question when the line cut. I smiled again and put the phone in my pocket with plans to call back when I got into my room. Just when I got to my room my phone rang again. "Julian?" I asked myself and looked at the phone, but it was another number. I raised my eye brow small and answered the call.

"Hello?" I said. “Hey, Juliet right? This is Julian." He said. I smiled. He probably run out of credit on the other line."Hey, what's up?" I said taking off my sandals. “You know, I've been meaning to ask you. How did you get my number?" I asked, slowly lying down on my bed. He giggled. "Oh I thought you knew by now. You left your phone in my car." He replied. I naturally put my hand in my pocket. My alternate phone wasn't there. "It must have slipped and fallen. So its with you right?" I asked again. He said yes and I calmed down a bit. That made sense. Interesting way to play out. "But hang on, that doesn't answer my question oh." I said, coiling into a spoon position. "Yea, that's right. I called a number on there to ask if the person knew your house so I bring it to you. The person, ehh Rita gave me some directions and said to call you on this number to confirm. I'm sorry if it’s weird." He explained. He sounded really nice. He had some low voice be like that. Lol. "Oh no. Thanks. I mean you went through all of this for me. I'm grateful." I replied. Awww he was so nice.

We spoke for a bit. He told me where he lived and vice versa. “Hey I’ve got to run. Will bring your phone over in a bit, alright?” He finally said and hung up. I laid down on my bed for a while and got up to do some work. After my late lunch I couldn’t keep my eyes open much longer. “Chale what kwraa?” I said to myself and hit my bed. In no time at all I had fallen asleep. “I can play the background…” My ringtone played. I opened my eyes and slowly put the phone under my pillow. Sadly enough I could still hear it ring. I took a look at it and saw the number. It was what Julian used to call me the first time. Then I remembered. He was bringing the phone to my place.

“Hello?” I answered reluctantly. “Oh did I wake you up? I’m so sorry.” He said. “No, no it’s ok. Are you at my place?” I said. There was a brief silence. “At your place?” He asked. I opened my eyes fully and checked the number again. “Isn’t this Julian?” I asked. “Yes, oh you should go back to sleep. I insist, you sound so tired.” He said again. Me naa I love me my sleep so I didn’t mind. We hung up and I turned to sleep some more. “Angmans!” My mother called. I had just started my second dream. I gave a feeble ‘yes’ and forced myself off my bed. The helper came to my room and said someone was looking for me.

I did the slowest quick fresh up ever and went outside. Then I saw him, Julian. He was standing outside the gate. Seriously? “Hi.” I said, with a mix of surprise and gladness fused with a little confused. "Hey, hope I'm not interrupting. I should have called before I came." He said. He had a nice smile. I smiled too. "Oh it's fine. When you called I didn't think you would come any time soon. I thought you were allowing me to sleep." I replied. "Oh you slept?" He asked, handing the phone over to me. "Yup, but you told me to." I teased. His smile seemed to fade. "Really? I ...I don't remember telling you that." He said with a slight giggle. "Ah, when you called me like 10 minutes ago." I said folding my arms. "Huh, I called you just once. In the afternoon." He said, and I froze.

That neighbour in my hood

I took a look at my new shoes, tried them on and put them back. It had just rained. I knew it would be wet outside. My mum was going to work soon so clearly taking the car was out! I wore my dress and stood in the mirror. There was something about that dress. It seemed to make me look like a doll irrespective of my size. lol. I plugged music into my ears and walked out of the house. When I noticed the road was empty I took out my phone and continued my whatsapp chats. It was my business partner so it was more about figures than silly gossip (not that I do that often). I got to the junction in no time. Just as I walked to the junction I saw a bus. “Madina!” the mate yelled to me. I thought for a second and shook my head. I have no idea why, because my stop was just on the way. Then from nowhere a black car pulled up next to me. “Are you going that way?” The driver said in the most casual of voices. I nodded and sat in the back seat, the front was taken. He was using an AC yaaay!

I took a little peek and saw that it was a little boy in the passenger seat. The guy driving wasn’t that old either. They were in a pretty thick discussion so I unplugged my earphones to eavesdrop small hehehe. “So all he has to do is press a button on his suit and fire comes out…” The older of the youngings said.  -______- Seriously? They were talking about the abilities of certain super heroes and the worst part about it was that older one was doing MOST of the talking. I almost plugged back my music, when I heard something else. “So by the time you get back I would have cooked. Do you want me to make the jollof again?” He said. A smile crawled on my face and I almost melted when the little one said. “Oh yes, I love the jollof.” I almost missed my stop. “Errmm…sorry to cut in but I will get off just right here.” I said, poking my big head from the back. The older brother nodded, noticing my presence!

He pulled over and I opened my door. I was just about to say thank you when he asked. “So do you live around where we picked you up?” I nodded. “Really, I’ve never seen you around.” He added. “Same here, how long have you been there though?” I asked. He looked at his brother. “Like what, two years?” He asked and his brother nodded. “I see, we moved in two years ago too.” I said and giggled. “Interesting. What’s your name?” He asked again. “Juliet” I said, getting out of the car. “Wow” He said and his brother giggled. I was waiting to hear “My mother is Juliet” or something like that. But he said, “I’m Julian.” We both giggled. “Well thank you Julian.” I said. “Alright sure, so I’ll see you around then” he said, and I closed the door. I said bye and left. That was a cute pair, I thought as I left.

As I walked off, I smiled. I should have taken his number so I can have a neighbour to hang out with. Oh well, maybe I would see him around. I walked into my fabric shop and bought my stuff. On my way back home I looked out for Julian but he was nowhere to be found. When I got to my gate, I got a call. The number wasn’t familiar. “Hello” I said. “Hi, is this Juliet?” the person said. “Yes, this is Juliet.” I replied, entering into the house. “Alright, this is Julian. We met today, with my little brother?” He said. All I could think was “how did he get my number??!”

His muse

"Chale you make ready?" Dean asked his bestfriend. They were back stage and Dean was trying to keep his friend focused. Edem was taking part in a talent competition. It was called the Comedy Blast. He was competing with nine other comedians. It wasn't hard to tell that Edem was having cold feet. "Did you hear the Funny Bone guy? Dean hmm I no go fit oh." He said with his head down. Edem wasn't a shy person by nature but a number of things had happened the past couple of weeks to put him in a bad situation. He lost his father, didnt make it to the University even though this was his second try. His mates like Dean, were currently going to second year and he felt left behind.

When auditions were open, Dean asked his friend to enter for two main reasons. One because he was really random and funny and the other because it would keep him busy. Edem liked the idea. Especially because the grand prize was a 1500 Cedis. With that he could gain admission into a private university. This was exciting. He made it past the auditions. He was now in the finals! But things went sour when he lost his dad. His father was the person who believed in him the most. When his results weren't so good his dad urged him on while his mother and sisters nagged away. The loss hit him hard. Now it was time for the finals of the competition. He was nervous. He didn't believe in himself anymore. "Herr, don't let me slap you oh. This is your chance. You better man up." Dean said pulling Edem off his chair. "Shake it off." He added. Just then the director of the show walked to them. "Edem Amelorku you are up in 2 minutes." He said reading from his clipboard. He looked up at Edem and smiled. "Don't worry you will be fine." He said and walked off quickly. Dean gave him an 'i told you so' look and pat him on the back. An usher walked over to them and led Edem to the stage. His name was mentioned and they walked onto the stage together. She turned around and walked back.

The crowd was bigger than he thought. The lights were on him. It was really show time. There was definitely no turning back now. He had to do this. "Hello beautiful people. If I don't make you laugh don't blame me." He said. There were just a few cheers and the room got silent. His heart missed a beat and he started to wiggle his arm nervously. All of a sudden she appeared. A young lady. The most beautiful Edem had ever seen. She walked into the room and took a seat right in the front row. Her silky dress danced on her like a waterfall. She had on a slim belt and all Edem could do was stare at such a slim waist. She wasn't wearing a lot of jewellery at all. Just one ZediCross bangle and silver earrings. She wasn't even in heels. She didn't have to wear them. She was just the right height. Edem smiled and tried to prevent himself from being disgraced. "I try to be honest..but it's hard to make a joke about your life when its boring." He said. A few people giggled then he saw it. Her amazing smile. It felt so warm. He wanted to see more.

"So I lost my cat last week and went straight to my neighbour who lives four blocks away. Why, because his name is Efo Segbefia." He said. the beautiful lady laughed. Edem felt rejuvinated in some strange way. He wanted to see more of that. "But the messed up part is that I am an Ewe myself. You see we are the only two Ewes in the neighbourhood so if it ain't me you bet its him." He went on. She laughed harder this time and her enchanting eyes almost disappeared. Edem went on and on seeing the different angles of her face as she giggled and laughed. When his time was up he dropped the mic in grand style and left the stage. Dean was backstage waiting for him. His mouth was open. "Chale how did I do?" Edem asked, worried. Dean paused for a while and finally said. "Herr!! You were good! Naa...better! In fact you were the best!" Edem smiled and turned to look at his mystery lady. Who was she?

If you meet my boyfriend

If you meet my boyfriend tell him I tried
I put up with so much and yet he still lied
Every time he hurt me, a bit of me died
So please, if you meet my boyfriend tell him I’m tired

If you meet my boyfriend tell him I’m in pain
It was always about him, always what he would gain
Never considering my heart and it drove me insane
If you meet my boyfriend tell him my tears are pouring like rain

If you meet my boyfriend tell him we just don’t belong
He is an amazing person but works much better alone
Even though I want to stay, my heart knows I have to move on
If you meet my boyfriend please tell him I’m gone
